My name is Paul Becque. When I first dated my wife, she called me Beqster, and the name has stuck! Now my friends and work colleagues use it too.

Since I was a child I wanted to know what life is all about. Consequently, I’ve studied many different beliefs and kept an open mind.

Buddhism and Taoism have been very inspirational for me. And, more recently, “The Secret” and our growing knowledge of quantum physics has taken me to an even deeper level of commitment to my discoveries. “Baloani” is simply a video diary of my journey and a reference point for anyone that resonates with my exploration.

I love film. I love going to the cinema and watching dvd’s at home. I’m always looking for an emotional journey and I’m happy to cry in public... but, on the whole, most movies I’ve watched offer a little entertainment value and some even feel like a complete waste of time.

But there are a handful that really make you think about yourself, your life and the path you are currently experiencing. These are the movies that somehow can change the way you think about the world, your perceptions of it, and make you want to take control of your life with a fire that’s burning in your belly.

Whether it’s a temporary feeling or a life changing vision, movies that have the power to move us in this a way should be an inspiration. We have all encountered films like these and I felt it would be a great tool to have a list of feel good movies, motivational and inspirational films, often based on true stories that could make our spare time and weekends that little bit better.

Sometimes we just need to be inspired to live life more fully. These movies may give you some ideas, or even the courage, to do just that.

I’ve simply listed everything that came to mind, they are in no particular order. If you’d be kind enough to tell me your favourites my using the form at the bottom of the page, I’ll be happy to add them to my list. With time, I will add a short synopsis for each one and perhaps even categorise them as the list grows.

Unexpectedly lively and amusing movie of a heartening true story,
one that gives Julia Roberts her best and most convincing role so far.

The Secret   (2006, documentary; Rhonda Byrne, Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield)

This DVD brought all of my reading and personal thoughts together. It brought me hope and let me know that I wasn’t the only person thinking this way. It’s documentary-style format uses well known mentors in this field to help more people understand how important it is to keep your thoughts focused on what you want to attract into your life. The book is a transcription of the film, so I recommend watching the dvd before you read the book. It will generate a clear picture in your mind of the teachers and the ideas they wish to convey.

Erin Brockovich   (2000, biographical drama; Julia Roberts)

This Oscar winning movie is based on a true story. Erin Brockovich is an unemployed single mother, desperate to find a job, but is having no luck. This losing streak even extends to a failed lawsuit against a doctor in a car accident she was in. With no alternative, she successfully talks her lawyer into giving her a job in compensation for the loss. While no one takes her seriously, with her trashy clothes and earthy manners, that soon changes when she begins to investigate a suspicious real estate case involving the Pacific Gas & Electric Company. An amazing movie that proves determination is a huge part of success.

Mr Holland’s Opus   (1995, drama; Richard Dreyfus)

This movie is understandably, an Oscar winner. The film is utterly amazing and infectious... certainly inspirational. Glenn Holland is a musician and composer who takes a teaching job to pay the rent while, in his 'spare time', he can strive to achieve his true goal - compose one memorable piece of music to leave his mark on the world. As Mr. Holland discovers 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans' and as the years unfold, the joy of sharing his contagious passion for music with his students becomes his new definition of success.

Tin Cup   (1996, sport, comedy, romance; Kevin Costner, Rene Russo)

I’m not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I love this sports themed romantic comedy. Roy McAvoy is a failed pro golfer who lives in a Winnebago at a shoddy driving range which he owns, in Texas. One day, a beautiful woman, Dr. Molly Griswold, appears at his driving range asking for golf lessons. She turns out to be the new girlfriend of McAvoy's longtime nemesis, the overly confident PGA superstar David Simms. Molly inspires Roy to start taking himself seriously again, and he decides to try to qualify for the US Open.

Every person of every age can appreciate and love this movie.
What a wonderful movie. History-wise, music-wise, and story-wise. Groundbreaking and life-changing work.
“The Secret” is a guide for living life in the divine flow. Coming Soon...

Pay It Forward   (2000, drama, romance; Kevin Spacey, Haley Joel Osment)

A must see movie! Young Trevor McKinney, troubled by his mother's alcoholism, is caught up by an intriguing assignment from his new social studies teacher. The assignment: think of something to change the world and put it into action. Trevor comes up with the idea of paying a favour not back, but forward - repaying good deeds not with payback, but with new good deeds done to three new people. Trevor's efforts to make good on his idea bring a revolution to the lives of himself, his mother, his emotionally scarred teacher and an ever-increasing circle of people around him.

Pay It Forward will make you laugh a little,
cry a lot, and profoundly affect you in a way
that keeps you thinking about the movie for weeks afterwards.

Yes! Man   (2008, comedy, romance; Jim Carrey)

Carl Allen’s live has come to a standstill. He has no future... until the day a friend convinces him to enroll in a personal development program based on a very simple idea... say yes to everything! Carl discovers with absolute amazement the magical power of "Yes", and sees his professional and romantic life turned upside down overnight: an unexpected promotion and a new girlfriend. But he soon discovers that not all opportunities shouldn't be taken. I think this movie is hilarious and really pokes fun at the whole self help industry... need a laugh? This is the one!

Pure joy. A great film, true to its rom-com genre roots.
I was uplifted, and grandly entertained!

The Bucket List   (2007, adventure, comedy; Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman)

Corprate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to make a list of all the things they have dreamed of doing in life, but never dared to, and then plan to do them all before they "kick the bucket" (hence the title of the movie). In the process, both of them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find the joy in life.

It’ll have you laughing out loud and
wanting to make your own bucket list.

Rudy   (1993, biographical drama; Sean Astin, Jon Favreau)

Based on the true story of Rudy Ruettiger, who grows up in a Catholic, working class family that loves Notre Dame football. He does not have the grades, the size or the talent to get into his beloved school so he follows his brothers and father into work at the steel plant. After his 22nd birthday his best friend Pete, who always believed in him, dies in an accident. Rudy then realizes that it is now or never to follow his life-long dream to play for the Fighting Irish. Despite fear of failure from his father and girlfriend he leaves to pursue his goal.

I must have watched this film a dozen times
and it never fails to bring a tear to the eye or a smile to the lips.

Slumdog Millionaire   (2008, drama, romance; Dev Patel, Freida Pinto)

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. He becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" He is arrested under suspicion of cheating, and while being interrogated, events from his life history are shown which explain why he knows the answers. At the heart of this films story, lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

A very realistic movie, that shows the best and worst of life in India.
A very moving film. A must see!

Jerry Maguire   (1996, comedy drama, romance; Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger)

Jerry Maguire used to be a typical sports agent: willing to do just about anything he could to get the biggest possible contracts for his clients, plus a nice commission for himself. Then, one day, he suddenly has second thoughts about what he's really doing. When he voices these doubts, he ends up losing his job and all of his clients, save Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player. Can Jerry resurrect his career while still staying true to himself?

This hard road to redemption and personal growth story,
combines sharp entertainment with a depth of character
that is rarely found in mainstream comedy.

The Color Purple   (1985, drama; Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey)

The film is adapted from a book by Alice Walker. It is about Celie a young black woman, who is abused by her step-father and becomes pregnant by him, promptly selling the baby. Celie is later married-off to a man that considers her to be worthless and soon her abuse occurs again. She has become a slave to her husband. There is some joy when her sister Nettie visits but is soon forced out by Celie's husband. The film is beautifully made and very touching. It is considered by many to be a timeless classic, powerful and moving. Definitely one to watch!

Give this one a try... rest assured you'll find yourself
laughing and crying with the colourful characters!

Hotel Rwanda   (2004, historical drama; Don Cheadle Nick Nolte)

Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. HOTEL RWANDA shows this man's courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September '94. The film is touching and believable.

Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most
highly-praised dramas of 2004 and rightly so!

Patch Adams   (1998, biographical comedy; Robin Williams)

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch" but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humour and humanity into his treatment of the patients. "We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease", he declares throughout the film.

An inspiring film that rewrote the text books
on mental health treatment, and all the more relevant
that it was based on a true story.

The Pianist   (2002, biographical drama; Adrien Brody, Emilia Fox)

A brilliant pianist, a Polish Jew, witnesses the restrictions Nazis place on Jews in the Polish capital, from restricted access to the building of the Warsaw ghetto. As his family is rounded up to be shipped off to the Nazi labour camps, he escapes deportation and eludes capture by living in the ruins of Warsaw. His gift for music saves his life and the final scene with a German soldier is one of the most emotionally galvanizing scenes you’ll find on the big screen.

This film moved me, made me cry, and ultimately made me
kiss the sidewalks as I walked out of the theater and thanked God
that I live in the free society that I do.

Marley & Me   (2008, comedy, drama; Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston)

Newspaper writers John and Jennifer Grogan move to Florida after getting married. In an attempt to stall Jennifer's "biological clock", John buys her a puppy. As the puppy Marley grows into a 100 pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy and gains no self-discipline. Marley's antics give John rich material for his newspaper column. As the Grogans mature and have children of their own, Marley continues to test everyone's patience by acting like the world's most impulsive dog.

Its a real family film and I am confident that every man,
woman and child will have a tear in their eye by the end.

Dad   (1989, drama, comedy; Jack Lemmon, Ted Danson)

A very busy, "never-got-enough-time" executive learns during a meeting that his mother may be dying and rushes home to her side. He ends up being his father's caretaker and becomes closer to him than ever before. In the process, he teaches his father to be more independent which causes problems with the man's wife. Estranged from his own son, the executive comes to realize what has been missing in his own life.

This movie is a favourite of mine, due mainly to the
fantastic performance from Jack Lemmon.
Get your tissues ready, it’ll hit home to everyone.

Shirley Valentine   (1989, comedy, romance; Pauline Collins, Tom Conti)

Shirley is a middle-aged housewife from Liverpool, who finds herself talking to the wall while she prepares her husband's chips and egg, wondering what happened to her life. She compares her current life with what she used to be like and knows that she has stagnated and is now in a rut. But when her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid vacation to Greece for two, she begins to see the world, and herself, in a new light.

A great British comedy
which both BAFTA and the American Academy chose to honour.
You’ll laugh until you cry.

Thelma & Louise   (1991, drama, thriller; Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis)

Louise works in a fast food restaurant as a waitress and has plenty of problems with her partner Jimmy; a musician, who is always on the road. Thelma is married to Darryl who likes his wife to stay in the kitchen, allowing him to watch football on TV. The girls decide to break out of their normal lives and jump in the car to hit the road for adventure! Their journey turns into a disaster ending in murder and a police chase as they try to escape by getting to Mexico.

This realistic example of drama is one of the main reasons why it
won an Oscar for best original screenplay
as the tension and tragedy really sinks in.

Holy Man   (1998, comedy; Eddie Murphy, Jeff Goldblum, Kelly Preston)

Eddie Murphy plays an enlightened eccentric named "G" (suggesting "guru" or "God"?) who becomes a national celebrity when he begins working as a presenter on a TV shopping network. With skyrocketing ratings and a flurry of cameos by celebrity hucksters, G delivers preachy platitudes encouraging Americans to stop buying and embrace the finer values of life and love. Holy Man achieves a delicate balance of comedy and commentary, whilst poking fun at my current career choice!

I love the idea of a mysterious, intelligent, well-intentioned man
captivating millions of people. Wouldn't it be funny if some obscure
shop-at-home channel managed to pull something like this off?

Love Happens   (2009, romantic comedy; Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston)

A successful and hugely popular self-help guru has all the answers but no time or intention to fall in love again. Charming florist, Eloise, on the other hand has no plan for life but tends to fall in love head over heels (usually with the wrong men). When they meet by chance in a hotel lobby and get overwhelmed by instant attraction, their lives get turned upside down and with the help of Eloise's friend, they soon realize that in order to have a future, they first need to confront their past.

Thought provoking and emotional,
a touching movie in relation to death and bereavement
with heart-warming performances all round,

Coach Carter   (2005, sport, drama; Samuel L. Jackson, Rob Brown)

Based on a true story about a controversial high school basketball coach. Ken Carter takes a coaching job under his rules. He believes that the players must maintain good grades and become a united team or they will not play. All the team players sign his contract to do just that. The team is undefeated and on it's way to the 1999 State Championship, when Coach Carter receives the low grades of his players. He cancels all team activities and locks the court until the team shows improvement.

This is an amazing film, with an intense performance from
the legend himself Samuel L Jackson! If u aren't a basketball fan,
it doesn't matter, it's a brilliant film!

Away We Go   (2009, comedy, romance; John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph)

A couple who is expecting their first child travel around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family. Phoenix, Tucson, Madison, Montreal, and Miami are all marked for a trial period as the two try to figure out who and what they would like to raise their family around. Along the way, they have misadventures and find fresh connections with an assortment of relatives and old friends who just might help them discover "home" on their own terms for the first time.

I love this movie! It’s gotta be in my all-time top ten.
Like most of Sam Mendes' movies,
it examines what it means to be truly happy.

Michael   (1996, comedy, drama; John Travolta, Andie MacDowell)

This is a warm and winning comedy-fantasy with a great performance from John Travolta. He gives one of his breeziest and most likable performances as Michael, an archangel whose quiet existence at the home of a lonely innkeeper, named Pansy, is disrupted when she reports his presence in her home to a newspaper. The editor sends reporters to the motel to check it out, but they have a hard time accepting they've met an angel, especially when you see what fun he gets up to. It’s a roar.

It is a wonderful, life affirming story with a positive message.
I love this movie more every time I watch it, mainly because
of the completely awesome performance from John Travolta.

Miracle   (2004, drama, sport; Kurt Russell, Patricia Clarkson)

Miracle follows the true-life story of Coach Herb Brooks and his team in there goal of winning the 1980 Olympic games in hockey. Standing against them is the seemingly invincible Russian squad who the team must overcome. The film follows the team from training, to the cut lists, and right to the Olympics. The scenes on the ice are beautifully crafted and filmed. You feel as if you are part of the team and feeling everything they do. Some of the sons of the actual players are in the movie.

Miracle is certainly worth watching,
especially with our current troubled times.
You don’t need to be a hockey fan to enjoy this movie.

Any Given Sunday   (1999, sport, drama; Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz)

Tony D'Amato is the head coach of the Miami Sharks, owned by the Christina Pagniacci, who is using the Miami Franchise only for profit. Trouble stirs up after long time star quarterback Cap Rooney is injured. A third string quarterback is brought in, and becomes the face of the franchise after having great game after great game. The only problem is, he plays with his head and not with his heart, with an aging team that needs an emotional leader to guide them to victory. Plenty of stars in this film!

This film reminds you why Oliver Stone is considered to be
one of the most, if not THE most, passionate filmmakers working today.
This movie could be the greatest sports movie of all time!
